My Romance With Poetry
the first impression one gets on seeing the title of this post is that of a love affair, or isn't it? love affair or nah, i've come a long way as a poem enthusiast right from the days of "queens premier" when i was adored and spoiled rotten with Ribena as the only child in my class who can recite those verses off-hand. To be honest, i deserve all the attention and spoiling if only one knows the rigorous experience i have every weekend trying to memorize those verses. I was made to understand there's no place for averages..okay! enough of the trip down memory lane. you probably expect me to go ahead and start dishing out stories about an awesome encounter where a poet changed my life or where i won the noble poet prize if there's anything like that. but, no! my romance with poet has been a one-sided thing in my part. It can be likened to the unrequited love of an admirer who meticulously observes all the manners of his potential lover without trying to make a move yet because for one reason, he's a perfectionist. Never believing a move should be made till all the skills is mastered. So when my mates were busy composing poems in secondary schools and getting them published in school magazines, i watch from an angle intrigued on how artistic that one is, and start comparing it already to something i had conceived earlier and abandoned because it wasn't good enough.
